Background: In 1986 SEPTA began an ambitious undertaking with its $650 million program to modernize and rebuild the entire Frankford Elevated Subway Line. Key to revitalizing the local community was the replacement of the existing 80-year-old Bridge-Pratt Terminal with a modern intermodal facility for the transfer of some 52,000 daily rail, bus and automobile passengers. The new Frankford Transportation Center (FTC) was the largest single site construction project ever undertaken by SEPTA. It included construction of a new 65,000 SF terminal building and four-level 1,000 space parking garage, a new guideway, interfaces with existing yards and elevated railway, the installation of signals, traction power, track, utility and street level work, lighting, and demolition. Construction was achieved with minimal interruptions to bus, rail and trackless trolley operations. JBC provided scheduling and estimating services during design and construction administration support during construction.
